Note: Cocoa has put restrictions on all it's docks. Docking (including dinghy's) is now limited to 3 hours with overnighting prohibited. Please protest this restriction to any local merchant you visit. It has an average temperature in the 60's in winter and in the 80's in summer with a average low of 50° and an average high of 92°. The city was founded by fishermen early in Florida's history. The first pioneers arrived in Cocoa around 1860. A post office was established at Magnolia Point in 1881 or 1882. First plats of the new settlement were made in 1882 under the name "Indian River City" on land owned by Captain R. A. Hardee. The name Indian River City was denied by the U.S. Postal authorities who claimed it was too long for use on a postmark so it became Cocoa. Cocoa Village is a Victorian delight on the west bank of the scenic Indian River. The Village sponsors holiday celebrations and other special events along with several Fine Art and Craft shows during the season. A number of homes and buildings on its tree-lined streets are listed on the National Historic Register, some dating back to the 1880s.
